About the Terra Linda Orcas

The Terra Linda Orcas Swim Team is a nonprofit, volunteer-run swim club serving families in San Rafael and the surrounding community. Founded in 1962, the Orcas are the oldest team in the Marin Swim League and have a long tradition of helping swimmers grow in skill, confidence, and sportsmanship.

The team is sponsored by the San Rafael Parks and Recreation Department and operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. While our coaches and lifeguards are professionally staffed, the Orcas receive no direct financial support from the City of San Rafael and rely on the active involvement of our families to operate successfully.

How the Orcas Are Run

The Orcas operate under written bylaws and are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that oversees team operations, finances, and long-term planning. The Board works closely with coaching staff and league representatives to ensure a safe, well-organized, and positive experience for all swimmers.

As members of the Marin Swim League, the Orcas follow league rules and participate in league-wide scheduling, meetings, and events throughout the season.

A Community Powered by Families

The Terra Linda Orcas are powered by parent volunteers. From swim meets and team events to fundraising and communications, family involvement is essential to the success of the program.

All families are expected to contribute time during the season by volunteering in a way that fits their availability and interests. Volunteer opportunities are communicated throughout the season, and support is provided to help new families get involved.

A Pathway for Swimmers of All Levels

The Orcas welcome swimmers ages 5–18 who can swim one lap (25 yards) unassisted. For younger swimmers and those still developing confidence and foundational skills, the Junior Orcas program offers a supportive learn-to-swim and skill-building entry point. Many swimmers begin in Junior Orcas before moving on to the full swim team.
