History & Traditions of the Terra Linda Orcas
The Terra Linda Orcas Swim Team has been part of the San Rafael community for generations. What began as a neighborhood swim team has grown into a long-standing summer tradition built on family involvement, volunteer spirit, and a shared love of swimming.
Our Beginnings
The Terra Linda Orcas were founded in 1962, making us the oldest of the ten teams in the Marin Swim League.
In 1972, the Terra Linda area was annexed into the City of San Rafael. Since then, the Orcas have been sponsored by the San Rafael Parks and Recreation Department. While the City provides coaching and lifeguard support, the Orcas have always operated as a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization.
From the very beginning, families have been at the heart of the team—organizing meets, fundraising, coordinating events, and creating a welcoming environment for swimmers of all ages and abilities.
A Volunteer-Powered Team
The Orcas are built on the belief that a strong team comes from shared effort. Parents, caregivers, and community members have always played a vital role in making the season possible.
Over the decades, thousands of volunteers have contributed their time and energy—timing races, running snack bars, organizing social events, serving on the board, and helping behind the scenes. This collective effort has allowed the team to remain accessible, affordable, and deeply connected to the neighborhood.
Volunteering is more than a requirement; it’s one of the ways families form friendships and become part of the Orcas community.
Part of the Marin Swim League
The Orcas compete as members of the Marin Swim League alongside other community-based teams from across Marin County.
League participation provides structure, consistency, and standards for competition, while still allowing each team to maintain its own identity. The Orcas are known throughout the league for their strong sense of team spirit, sportsmanship, and family involvement.
Traditions That Bring Us Together
Over the years, the Orcas have developed traditions that shape the season and bring families together beyond the pool.
These traditions may evolve from year to year, but often include:
- Team dinners and early-season gatherings
- Casual Friday night poolside events
- Social events for swimmers and parents
- End-of-season celebrations following Championships
These shared experiences help build friendships, strengthen team bonds, and create memories that last well beyond a single season.
Awards & Recognition
Recognition has always been an important part of the Orcas tradition. Each season, swimmers and families are celebrated not only for performance in the pool, but also for effort, improvement, sportsmanship, and the many ways they contribute to the team community.
The Orcas believe that success looks different for every swimmer. Awards and recognition are designed to reflect growth, commitment, and team spirit—whether that means learning a new skill, supporting teammates, showing perseverance, or giving back through volunteering.
Awards Night
At the end of each season, the team comes together for an annual Awards Night to celebrate the year and recognize the achievements of swimmers and families. Awards Night marks the culmination of the season and is a time to reflect on progress, effort, and shared experiences.
During the awards celebration:
- All swimmers and families are recognized for their participation
- Swimmers receive age-group awards for achievement and improvement
- Team-wide awards highlight qualities such as leadership, coachability, inspiration, and sportsmanship
- Parent and volunteer contributions are honored for their impact on the team
A Legacy of Perpetual Awards
Some Orca awards are perpetual honors named after individuals and families who made lasting contributions to the team. These awards represent the values that have shaped the Orcas across generations, including dedication, encouragement, selflessness, and love of the sport.
While specific awards and recipients change each year, their purpose remains the same: to recognize the people who embody what it means to be an Orca.
A Legacy of Growth
For many families, the Orcas are a multi-year—and sometimes multi-generation—experience. Swimmers grow from tentative beginners into confident athletes, and parents often form friendships that extend far beyond the season.
Former swimmers return as volunteers, coaches, and mentors, helping pass along the values and spirit that make the Orcas special.
Honoring Our Legacy
Many of the Orcas’ traditions and awards are rooted in the dedication of swimmers, parents, coaches, and volunteers who helped shape the team over generations.

Looking Ahead
While the team continues to evolve, the heart of the Orcas remains the same: a neighborhood swim team built on family involvement, mutual support, and a love of swimming.
Each season adds a new chapter to the Orcas story, shaped by the swimmers, families, coaches, and volunteers who show up and make it happen.
We’re proud of our history—and excited for what’s still to come.
